History of the Old School House (1874 - 1948)

The little old school house is the home of the Dennis Township Museum and History Center. It was built in 1874 on the corner of Petersburg Road and Hall Avenues. The land for this school was purchased from Charles and Sophia (Stites) Ludlam in 1872 for $250. On April 15, 1948 a fire occurred which destroyed the second floor. Later, repairs were made and a new roof was constructed over the first floor. A property swap took place between the Board of Education and the Township Committee in 1951 and a new Consolidated School was constructed on Academy Road. The Old Dennisville School building became the Dennis Township Municipal Hall until 1994 when the new Municipal Complex was completed.

When the Old School House was vacated, the Township Committee gave permission for the building to be used as a Museum and History Center. Its on-going mission is to build a comprehensive collection of artifacts and memorabilia that serve to depict the history and life of the eight villages that comprise the township. The eight villages are: Belleplain, Eldora, North-West Dennis, Dennisville, South Dennis, Clermont, South Seaville and Ocean View. The museum's phone number is (609) 861-1899.

The Old School House Museum is developing an oral history project involving any interested township residents who are military combat veterans.

“We want to record their stories so that there will always be a record of the brave service they’ve provided,” said Committeeman Al DiCicco, liaison to the museum.

DiCicco hopes that veterans from our nation’s military engagements will share their stories which will be tape recorded by museum volunteers. Copies of the recordings will be given to the participant with a copy retained for the museum for use by anyone doing related history projects.

“All we really need by way of supplies is a good tape recorder and lots of blank tapes. We’re prepared to record each participant either via a question and answer interview or just turn on the machine and let them speak…whichever way is more comfortable for the participant.”

While the project is still in the planning stage, museum volunteers are soliciting names and contact information of any township veteran who is interested in participating.

The museum is currently developing a collection of the published works of local authors. If you have a published book (fiction, nonfiction, or poetry) which you would like to donate to include in our new museum collection, please contact Ray Rebmann at Your work will be catalogued and displayed in the museum.

The Dennis Township Museum and History Center is part of the Township's multi-dimensional Culture and Heritage Department. This department is directed by Committeeman, Albert M. Dicicco who is the Liaison and Supervisor of the Museum's operations.
